Spin-off series for BBC Two’s ‘The House that £100K Built’
Last year in The House that £100K Built, Kieran Long and Piers Taylor followed six self-builders as they took on the biggest gamble of their lives, trying to build a home from scratch. Each had their life savings at stake, little or no experience and less than a hundred thousand pounds to spend. Our experts inspired the self-builders, helping them create the dream home they longed for by being clever with their cash and creative with design.
This year, as house prices continue to soar, many people are trapped in homes that no longer meet their needs but they cannot afford to move. In this new six-part spin off series, The £100K House: Tricks of the Trade Kieran and Piers are coming to the aid of existing homeowners who desperately need to overhaul their unsuitable homes. But with the tightest of budgets and little or no experience, Kieran and Piers will try to come up with ingenious solutions to help them transform their unsuitable homes.
The series features homeowners with all sorts of problems to solve, including former nurse, Dawn, who dreamed of a relaxing home for her retirement, but an impulse buy left her with a tiny cottage that’s so small she doesn’t have room to invite her family round, and Kath and Greg whose impractical and potentially hazardous home means they can’t safely use the space with their two young daughters.
Kieran Long, Senior Curator of contemporary architecture, design and digital at the Victoria & Albert Museum, gains exclusive access to some of the UK’s most exciting architecture to seek out inspirational architectural ideas that can have a place in ordinary people’s homes.
Meanwhile, ground-breaking architect Piers’ ingenuity will be tested to the limit as he’s challenged to find ways of bringing innovative architectural solutions into people’s homes on the tightest of budgets. From whole structural re-modelling on just a few thousand pounds, to cutting edge kitchens on a few hundred pounds – he’ll aim to prove that a well designed home need not cost a fortune.
Kieran and Piers will help people create extraordinary homes out of ordinary ones, but with design dilemmas at every turn and their life savings at stake will homeowners manage to create the house they’ve always wanted, but believed they could never have? – Remarkable Television
The series is produced by Remarkable Television, an Endemol company for the BBC.
