Coronation Street star Katy Cavanagh is leaving the soap at the end of her current contract.
The actress is seeking new acting opportunities with her character, Julie Carp, expected to remain on the cobbles until late spring.
“I have decided it’s time to take a break from the cobbles and pursue other projects and opportunities. I have loved every minute in the world of Julie Carp and I’m not ruling out a return to the Street in the future. However I am looking forward to a new challenge and a pair of flat shoes.” – Cavanagh
Julie was introduced to the serial in April 2008 as the girlfriend of Kirk Sutherland (Andrew Whyment). Early storylines saw the character secure a job at Underworld and discover that she is the half-sister of Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver).
She later had a long-running romance with head teacher Brian Packham (Peter Gunn), which ended over his reluctance to foster children, and is currently dating Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin). ITV.com reports that Julie’s relationship with Dev will hit upon troubled times leading to her departure from the show.
“Julie Carp has become a warm, wonderful and eccentric character able to raise a laugh and a tear in the same scene. Everyone at Corrie wishes Katy all the very best and hopefully as far as Julie is concerned, the cobbles haven’t seen the last of her.” – Producer, Stuart Blackburn
Prior to joining the street, Cavanagh had roles in The Cops, Dalziel and Pascoe, Shameless and The Bill.
