Harry Enfield and Haydn Gwynne to star in The Windsors

Queen Elizabeth in Manchester 2011

Channel 4 has unleashed more details about its new comedy soap opera The Windsors. Filming begins on the new six part series that will be broadcast in the spring.

Imagine, who really controls the sceptre in Charles and Camilla’s marriage? What do the Royals really think of Kate? Does Wills really want to be King? Will Harry ever take Pippa up the aisle or will they end on a bum note? And what do Beatrice and Eugenie actually do for a living? – Channel 4

Comedic royalty Harry Enfield will be crowned as HRH Prince Charles with Haydn Gwynne as Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall. Hugh Skinner is heralded as Prince ‘Wills’ William, Duke of Cambridge with Louise Ford his Queen consort-in-waiting, ‘Kate’, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Morgana Robinson will star as Kate’s sister, Pippa and Richard Goulding takes his place fifth in line to the throne as Prince Harry. Ellie White and Celeste Dring are pronounced as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, while Katy Wix and Tim Wallers will command the duty of their doting parents Fergie and Prince Andrew, with Matthew Cottle decreed as Prince Edward.

Written by the co-creators of Star Stories, Bert Tyler-Moore and George Jeffrie, The Windsors will put our beloved Royal Family into the comedy spotlight. The series is a wry take on what the soap opera of their lives (and loves) might just be like. Delving behind the headlines and gossip columns, The Windsors lets our imaginations run riot in this ludicrous parody.

“In The Windsors, our much-loved Royal family is re-imagined through the lens of a soap opera, and although the stories are completely fictional, some are inspired by real events. As a result, writers Bert and George have outdone even the funniest, most ludicrous issue of Hello! magazine ever.”  – Head of Comedy Ch4, Phil Clarke

It isn’t the first time the royal family has been sent-up in saga, the channel aired The Palace previously which focused on the fictional lives of the real British royal family while stateside a fictional British royal family has proved a hit for E network in The Royals starring Elizabeth Hurley. A short-lived series for ITV, also entitled The Palace, aired in 2008 starring Jane Asher. Again another fictional family of royals took centre stage in that. The best fictional portrayal of our beloved Queen and company however has to be that provided by Central Television’s Spitting Image. The memories of royal puppets still linger long with fans even today.

The Windsors will air for six half hour programmes on Channel 4 later this year.
