Remembering Sir Bruce Forsyth

ATV Today takes a photographic look back at the career of the late Sir Bruce Forsyth who died yesterday aged 89.

“I’m in charge!” an early catchphrase for Bruce when hosting ATV’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

Beat the Clock was the popular game show section of Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

Following the success of the Palladium job, he was given his own series The Bruce Forsyth Show which ran for most of the 1960s.

Bruce switched ATV for the BBC when he launched The Generation Game in 1971, hosting until 1977.

“Didn’t they do well?”

In 1978 Bruce returned to ITV to front Big Night In from London Weekend Television.

The 1980s also saw LWT launch game show Play Your Cards Right.

“Nothing for a pair, not in this game!”

And in the late 80s saw skill challenge series You Bet! also launched by London Weekend Television for ITV.

In 1990 Bruce was lured back to the BBC to host a relaunched Generation Game. The show was also revived for a special ‘now and then’ series by UKTV (pictured) in 2007.

The UKTV series brought back contestants for new games as well as classic moments re-broadcast.

After the gen game it was back to ITV for further editions of Play Your Cards Right with LWT.

Bruce also revived top rating 1980s game show The Price Is Right for Yorkshire TV.

It was a final return to the BBC for the 2000’s as Bruce teamed up with Tess Daly to host celebrity dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing.

Bruce hosted the show until 2014. Other recent work for the BBC included variety reflective series Halls of Fame.

One of his final television appearances was in a charity sketch of Downton Abbey.
