Coronation Street bosses to kill off Rita Tanner?

Coronation Street bosses are reportedly poised to kill off Street stalwart Rita Tanner.

The Sun claims that the long-serving newsagent owner will meet her maker following a brain tumour diagnosis.

Rita’s forgetfulness in recent instalments of the ITV saga has sparked fears over her future among fans who have been mooting dementia as a potential cause. However, the tabloid’s Sunday edition has revealed it is a brain tumour Rita has and that a decision she makes about her treatment could spell the end of her.

“It has been suggested she might have dementia, but she does not. In fact, she will be diagnosed with a tumour and her doctors will say there is a serious risk she will die if they don’t remove it. But Rita is terrified that she could not know who she is, or recognise her friends. All the indications are that this will end tragically.” – Coronation Street source

Barbara Knox first appeared in Coronation Street as Rita in 1964, but did not become a regular fixture of the cobbles until 1972. Rita has had many storylines; her involvement with murderous conman Alan Bradley (Mark Eden) in the late 1980s perhaps the most notable.
