TV Choice 2017 gong winners revealed

The great and the good of broadcasting gathered last evening at The Dorchester, Park Lane, London for the annual TV Choice Magazine Awards 2017.

There were wins for This Morning, Emmerdale and Ant and Dec at the gong show which celebrates the best talent and programmes seen across the past twelve months on UK television screens.

The Best Entertainment Show award went to Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. The 5th time the Geordie duo have picked up the top prize in this category for the ITV series.

“For their 2017 series they were joined by Scarlett Moffatt, and the duo made sure the show went out on a high, with a series finale broadcast live from Main Street at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.” – TV Choice.

Other contenders for the award were BBC One’s All Round To Mrs Brown’s, ITV2’s Celebrity Juice and The Graham Norton Show for BBC One.

Call The Midwife picked up the gong for Best Drama. The BBC One programme, set in London’s East End focusing on nuns and nurses, has taken the title now four times.

“The show’s been such a hit with viewers, the BBC have commissioned another three series which will keep the ladies of Nonnatus House onscreen until at least 2020, by which point the action will have shifted to 1965.” – TV Choice

Other dramatic sagas hoping to take the prize, but not quite grabbing it this year included medical series Casualty and time travel science fiction institution Doctor Who.

Ant and Dec took the entertainment gong for ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

The Best Daytime award was vied for by ITV’s The Chase, BBC One’s Pointless and ITV’s Loose Women with This Morning, also from ITV, swiping the trophy from the rest.

“Last year’s winners retain the trophy for the show that Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby have co-hosted since 2009. Next year the show originally presented by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan celebrates its 30th birthday, but before then there’ll be a change of scene as London Studios are rebuilt and This Morning will have a temporary move to Television Centre.” – TV Choice

Strictly Come Dancing rather than issuing a glitterball trophy, have instead picked up the TV Choice Award for Best Talent Show. The BBC One series is now heading into its 15th run, with a line up of celebrities ranging from Ruth Langsford to Brian Connolly appearing in the 2017 production.

“The Strictly team celebrate a win for the 2016 series which culminated with TV presenter Ore Oduba beating Louise Redknapp and Danny Mac to lift the gitterball trophy.” – TV Choice

Others in the running for the gong included ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, BBC One’s The Great British Bake Off and MasterChef.

This Morning has been entertaining viewers for 29 years.

“In 2015 the show built a home for Veterans, with two very special helpers in the shape of Princes William and Harry.” – TV Choice

Others just missing out on the top award included Channel 4’s Gogglebox, ITV’s Long Lost Family and  Tattoo Fixers from E4.

Little Boy Blue took the top gong for Best New Drama. Others nominated were The Crown, The Good Karma Hospital and Victoria.

“Factual drama supremo Jeff Pope – who also brought us The Moorside this year – penned and produced this moving four-parter about the shocking murder of Croxteth schoolboy Rhys Jones in 2007. The drama starred Stephen Graham, who’s also known for This is England and Boardwalk Empire, as Det Supt Dave Kelly, the officer on a mission to bring Rhys’s killer to justice.” – TV Choice

She was awarded the CBE in 2012.” – TV Choice

A Berry nice award.

This time she’s won for her portrayal of the village favourite as Laurel’s dealt with husband Ashley’s dementia and death, while battling not to give in to her alcohol addiction.” – TV Choice
