Coronation Street axes Bruno Langley
Bruno Langley to leave Coronation Street amid sexual assault claims.
Langley, who has played Todd Grimshaw in the saga on and off since 2001 has been under investigation by ITV Granada bosses over a complaint from a woman that he had ‘acted inappropriately’ towards her in a Manchester bar.
On Thursday, Greater Manchester Police released a brief statement confirming that they were also looking into an alleged incident at the city’s Band on the Wall nightclub.
“At around 1am on Sunday, 1st October 2017, police received a report a woman in her 30s had been sexually assaulted at an entertainment venue. Inquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made.” – Greater Manchester Police statement
Although Langley denies any wrongdoing, last night it was confirmed that he was being written out of the ITV soap.
“Bruno Langley is no longer contracted to Coronation Street.” – Coronation Street spokesperson
The 34-year-old actor was said to be ‘shocked and upset’ upon learning of the claims against him – the exact nature of which are not yet known. He had been enjoying a night out with cast mates at a Craig Charles’ DJ set when the alleged incident took place.
It’s thought that producers are now trying to rework scenes that his character is supposed to be appearing in. An insider told The Sun: “New scenes show Adam Barlow telling Ken that Todd has left Weatherfield with his young ward Summer.”
Todd arrived in Weatherfield in 2001 with brother Jason (Ryan Thomas) and their mum Eileen (Sue Cleaver). He left in 2004, returning briefly in 2007 and 2011 and then permanently in 2013. The character famously set tongues wagging when he came out as gay – trying it on with a sleeping Nick Tilsley (Adam Rickitt) whilst dating Nick’s sister Sarah (Tina O’Brien).
Outwith Coronation Street Bruno has appeared in Doctor Who and had a successful theatre career including Romeo and Juliet, A Taste of Honey, Calendar Girls and the 60th Anniversary tour of The Mousetrap.
“Sadly, I will no longer be working on Coronation Street. Playing the role of Todd Grimshaw since I was 17 years old has been a huge part of my life, and an absolute honour.
“I would like to thank all of my friends who work on the show for their love, friendship and support during this extremely difficult period.
“I will make a further statement in due course, and when I am able to do so.” – Bruno Langley
