Blackpool celebrates Ken Dodd’s 90th birthday with Madame Tussauds

Comic legend, Ken Dodd, has been presented on stage with a special “diamond” tickle stick to mark his milestone 90th birthday.

“I saw my figure a few years ago when it was first made and it’s been magical to be reunited with it today. It’s amazing to see yourself encapsulated at a certain moment in time. The new tickling stick is fantastic, I’m going to use it on stage from now on!” – Ken Dodd

He was given the unique gift at The Grand Theatre yesterday by Madame Tussauds Blackpool to celebrate this special birthday which he celebrates today, November 8th.

Ken’s wax figure was also on stage and a replica of the diamond tickling stick has been added to his figure for visitors to Madame Tussauds Blackpool to see. His wax figure was first made in 2011 and Ken was excited to be reunited with his likeness.

The Squire of Knotty Ash has been entertaining fans with his plumptious humour for generations and has performed a show in Blackpool at varying venues every single year since his first performance in the resort in 1955.  Doddy has also hosted his own television comedy series for the BBC, ATV and LWT. He’s also been seen in serious acting parts in shows such as Doctor Who and soap opera Crossroads.

Ken is described as the last great music hall entertainer and is a firm favourite with visitors to Madame Tussauds Blackpool. So as a special honour, for one week after his birthday, visitors to the attraction are invited to join in the celebrations by signing his 90th birthday book and take a rare photo of themselves and Ken with his special tickling stick.

Ken Dodd stars alongside Noele Gordon in a scene from ATV serial Crossroads.

This year, Madame Tussauds Blackpool welcomed American pop princess Ariana Grande, Coronation Street barmaid Michelle Connor to its new Rovers Return Inn beer garden, and revealed physicist Professor Cox in both wax and 3D hologram form.

With plenty more wax figures planned for 2018, Madame Tussauds Blackpool is constantly offering visitors the chance to meet new famous faces for the ultimate celebrity experience they tell us.

“Ken Dodd is more than just an iconic comedian. With over 60 years in the industry, he is truly a national treasure. He comes to perform at The Grand Theatre in Blackpool every year and we wanted to give him a fitting tribute and couldn’t think of a better way than to give him a bespoke tickling stick.” – Matthew Titherington, General Manager at Madame Tussauds Blackpool
