Sophie Thompson joins Coronation Street

The Four Weddings and a Funeral actress will play a ‘quirky medium’ in the ITV saga.

Rosemary (Thompson) meets Audrey (Sue Nicholls) when she visits her salon and convinces her she has been contacted by her late husband Alf.

Audrey’s daughter Gail (Helen Worth) is sceptical of Rosemary’s ‘gift’, but becomes intrigued when Rosemary claims to have been contacted by her deceased spouses too including serial killer Richard Hillman.

“Sophie is perfect for the role of Rosemary and we are excited she is joining the cast and working alongside Helen and Sue. Gail and Audrey are convinced she is getting messages from Alf and Gail’s husbands. It remains to be seen if she is all she claims to be.” – ITV

Sophie will first appear on screen in mid-March, ITV.com say.

Sophie won the 1999 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the London revival of Into the Woods. Other credits include Gosford Park and EastEnders.

Gail’s third husband Richard Hillman is one of Corrie’s most notable villains
