Telly Today: From the NTA’s to Art, Passion and Power

One to Watch: National Television Awards 2018, ITV, STV and UTV, 7.30pm

The viewers have spoken. The votes are in. Britain’s best-loved TV programmes and performers will tonight prepare to take home the gongs in the 23rd National Television Awards. The star-studded ceremony will be broadcast live on ITV, from The O2 London, and hosted by the inimitable Dermot O’Leary.

The NTAs are paying tribute to the late, great Sir Bruce Forsyth by naming a major prize after him. Ant &Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Graham Norton Show, Celebrity Juice and All Round to Mrs Brown’s have the honour of battling it out for the inaugural Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award.

A brand new category, Crime Drama, recognises a year when primetime mysteries became our favourite TV genre, and pits Line of Duty against Broadchurch, Little Boy Blue and Sherlock. It was also a milestone series for The Great British Bake Off, which debuted on a new channel with a new-lookline-up. Can the sweet-toothed contest seal its big-money move’s success by pipping I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, MasterChef and Love Island to the Challenge Show prize?

Can reigning champions Ant & Dec make it a jaw-dropping 17-year winning streak and retain their TV Presenter title? Stiff competition comes from ITV colleagues Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby who go head to head for the first time, but will fellow nominee Bradley Walsh win the chase before he takes a trip in the Tardis in the next series of Doctor Who? It’s too close to call for the Drama award, where infidelity potboiler Doctor Foster and date-rape drama Liar come up against medical stalwarts Call The Midwife and Casualty – not to mention world-conquering phenomenon Game Of Thrones, which is hoping to take a prize home to Westeros in its final year.

It’s also a clash of the acting titans for Drama Performance, with Taboo star Tom Hardy and Broadchurch’s leading man David Tennant tackling a triumvirate of our top TV actresses in Sheridan Smith, Jenna Coleman and Suranne Jones. Coronation Street’s Lucy Fallon saw Bethany Platt through an emotional 12 months. She joins co-star Barbara Knox, as well as the ever-popular Danny Miller (Emmerdale) and Lacey Turner (EastEnders) in Serial Drama Performance.

TV Judge hails the crucial role of our iconic on-screen judges and looks like one of the most closely-fought awards. BGT’s David Walliams is pitted against his boss, talent show king Simon Cowell, while The Voice UK’s will.i.am and Bake-Off’s Paul Hollywood are also strong contenders.

Art, Passion and Power, BBC Four, 9pm

Paradise Regained is the second edition of this four-part series. Tonight viewers will discover how in the year 1660 something miraculous began to happen.

After the execution of Charles I the Royal Collection had been sold off and scattered to the four winds. But now, with the restoration of Charles II, the monarchy was back, and with it their driven, sometimes obsessive, passion for art. Slowly but surely, new pieces were acquired, while others were returned out of fear of reprisal: the Royal Collection had sprung back to life.

In this episode Andrew Graham-Dixon tells the story of the Royal Collection’s remarkable resurrection. Following its fortunes from Charles II through to the 18th century and the enlightened collecting of George III, we see some of its greatest treasures: a jewel-encrusted salt cellar in the shape of a castle, a magnificent gold State Coach and masterpieces by Vermeer, Canaletto and Leonardo da Vinci.

One Night with My Ex, Channel 5, 10pm

Three more former couples are brought together for a night to discuss what went wrong and whether they are willing to give their romance one more try.

It was love at first sight for Tim, 29, when he spotted Hannah, 23, at the pub where he worked. They began a relationship, but when Hannah found out about ‘another woman’ off she went into the sunset. Still in love with Hannah Tim is keen to discover if there is any chance of a reunion.

Leigh and Ross, both 26, met online and had a passionate affair. But she felt he was looking for more than she could ever give him so ended their blooming lusting lifestyle. Leigh has an unexpected announcement to make which may scupper any chance of a re-coupling.

Finally Charlotte, 31, and Phil, 40, were another couple that united via the internet. The romance lasted half a year, but Phil departed when he felt Charlotte no longer trusted him. She believes adamantly that he cheated on her, can there be any way forward?

Harry Hill’s Tea Time, Sky One, 8.30pm

It’s the fourth outing for this second series of the madcap comedian’s Sky show.

In this episode Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter is the next celebrity to brave Harry Hill’s crazy kitchen. And it’s rather fortunate timing because the kitchen’s resident pet sausage could give birth at any moment.

Sky tell us that viewers can expect funny clips and hilarious sketches as Harry puts roast turkey on the menu, pokes fun at Jenny’s hit film The Railway Children and challenges her to mould a bust of Jeremy Paxman out of stuffing.

Village of the Year, Channel 4, 3pm

It’s the eighth episode of this Penelope Keith fronted series for Channel 4.

In this afternoon delight viewers can enjoy the views from the north of Scotland to the west of Cornwall as Penelope and her team of judges are on the hunt for the Village of the Year.Craft expert Patrick Grant helps to update the 3000-year-old white chalk horse of Uffington. In Kent, Penelope takes in the magnificent views of peg-tiled roof tops in Goudhurst. Archaeologist Alex Langlands travels to Suffolk and finds the Bardwell bells appealing.

And in Blunham in Bedfordshire, garden designer Juliet Sargeant comes up smelling of roses at their yearly floral festival. Which village will have a chance of being a Village of the Year finalist?
