Former Brookside star Louis Emerick joins Coronation Street
The 54-year-old Liverpudlian – who played Mick Johnson in the defunct Channel 4 saga – is to play a new love interest for Liz McDonald in the show.

Manchester Evening News reports that Emerick will begin filming imminently at the ITV soap’s Salford production base as Mike, an old school teacher of Liz’s son Steve.
“I am chuffed to bits to be joining Corrie, I first appeared in the show in 1986 as a delivery man, it’s only taken me 32 years to be invited back. I can’t wait to start working alongside Simon and Beverly who I have known for years, it’s going to be a lot of fun.” – Louis Emerick
The actor will be with the ITV show for a ‘few months’, however bosses could decide to extend his contract post-debut.
In cul-de-sac based soap opera Brookside, which aired on Channel 4 from 1982 until 2003, Emerick played cabbie and shopkeeper Mick between 1989-2001. The character’s hard-hitting storylines included being stalked, helping his cancer-ridden mother-in-law to die, and steroid abuse.
Emerick’s other credits include Benidorm, Doctors, Last of the Summer Wine, and gangster film Layer Cake.
“Louis’ character Mike is not someone Steve is pleased to see again after years apart, and it gets worse when he develops a crush on Liz. It leads some amusing scenes on the cobbles.” – Coronation Street source
