Shane Richie is returning to EastEnders

EastEnders ‘legend’ Shane Richie is reportedly headed back to the Square.

The Sun reports that the 54-year-old – who is currently appearing in ITV comedy-drama Benidorm – will reappear as Alfie Moon in the beeb saga later this year.

Viewers last saw Alfie in the 2017-aired flop spin-off series Redwater when he flat lined during an operation to alleviate the symptoms of a brain tumour. The fate of Alfie’s wife Kat – actress Jessie Wallace – was also left up in the air after she was involved in a serious boating accident. However, EastEnders bosses announced that Jessie would be reprising her role late last year- joining other members of the Slater family making a comeback.

Cheeky chappy Alfie Moon first appeared in Walford back in 2002 when he took over the Queen Vic.

The news left fans wondering how Alfie’s absence will be explained in the scripts.

“With Kat’s comeback the writers knew viewers would ask when Alfie would be back too, so they’ve managed to convince Shane to return,” an EastEnders source explained.

“It won’t be long-term but he’ll play a role in a number of storylines in the coming months.”

Jessie returns to Walford as Kat tonight on BBC One in an episode scripted by former EastEnders writing supremo Tony Jordan who last wrote for the show back in 2008. The episode airs at 9pm.

Kat and Alfie were last seen in BBC One drama Redwater. The spin-off has been axed after one series due to low ratings.
