True Entertainment to mark M*A*S*H anniversary

M*A*S*H will reach its next UK anniversary on 20th May.

To celebrate the first UK broadcast of M*A*S*H 46 years ago on 20th May 1973 True Entertainment will be airing a whole week of the best of the series’ episodes, films and documentaries every night starting with the first ten editions of M*A*S*H back to back on its original launch night date.

The series, produced by 20th Century Fox, began stateside on September 17th 1972 on CBS Television with its UK debut the following year on BBC Two. M*A*S*H – an acronym for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital – is set during the  Korean War of 1950–53.

Developed by Larry Gelbart, the television version was adapted from the 1970 feature film M*A*S*H, which, in turn, was based on Richard Hooker’s 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The programme follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea The show’s title sequence features an instrumental-only version of Suicide Is Painless, the original movie theme song.

The show was created after an attempt to film the original book’s sequel, M*A*S*H Goes to Maine, failed. The television series is remains the best-known of the M*A*S*H ventures and continues to stand as highest-rated shows in American television history. The series joined the BBC Two schedules on May 20th 1973. The programme ended production in 1982, after eleven series and 256 episodes. The last edition aired stateside on 28th February 1983.

Despite ending nearly 40 years ago the series has been re-run several times in the U.S and UK with British repeats most recently seen on Forces TV.
