Arielle Free to host Weekend Early Breakfast for Radio 1

The BBC have announced that Scottish DJ and TV presenter Arielle Free is joining the Radio 1 line-up.

Arielle will host the Weekend Early Breakfast between Friday-Sunday (Friday 4-6am / Saturday-Sunday, 5-7am), starting on Friday 6 September. Adele Roberts will host the show Mondays to Thursdays.

The show is brand new to BBC Radio 1 and will air before Weekend Breakfast with Matt and Mollie.

Arielle started out as a dancer and got into presenting by accident when, while dancing at the Reading Festival in 2006, she was asked by a friend to lend her chatty nature to a backstage interview. Bitten by the presenting bug, she got a job as a host on children’s TV show Pop Girl on Sky.

She went on to present on 4Music for Channel 4 and on various radio stations. She has previously featured on Radio 1 as a cover presenter, but once noted that she would love to “follow in the footsteps of Jo Whiley and Zoe Ball” by landing her own show on the station.

Arielle’s other credits include podcast Love Island: The Morning After and Scrambled! on CITV, as well as coverage of T in the Park for BBC Scotland.

“To use a cliché, it is a dream come true for me to join the greatest radio station in the world. Radio 1 is the reason why I got into broadcasting in the first place and has been the soundtrack to my life. I’ve been a music lover ever since my mum took me from festival to festival in the womb. It’s truly an honour to wake the nation up and ready for the weekend.” – Arielle Free

The BBC have also announced that Mollie King will host Best New Pop (6am-6.30am) for Radio 1 on Fridays as it moves from its current Monday slot. Listeners can expect the very best in pop and new music from the show. Mollie will continue to host the Weekend Breakfast show (Friday 6.30am-10am, Saturday & Sunday 7am-10am ) alongside Matt Edmondson.

“I’m really excited to be presenting Best New Pop on Fridays. I love pop music, it’s a huge passion of mine and I love discovering new talent. So I can’t wait to bring you all the best new pop tunes first every week on Radio 1.” – Mollie King

As part of these weekend schedule changes, Radio 1’s Wind Down, currently 4am to 6am on Saturdays, will become a one-hour show from 4am-5am (Saturday-Sunday), with Saturday’s chill-out show hosted by Chill Labels, whilst Sunday will see a companion show, Radio 1’s Chillout Anthems. 3am-4am Monday to Sunday the station will also showcase a range of new podcasts, music mixes and documentaries from BBC Sounds.
