Inspired by Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, Sanditon, has been a compelling depiction of a Regency seaside town. With the backdrop the great social and economic changes of the age.

When a carriage accident introduces the young Charlotte Heywood to the Parker family, she embarks on a journey from the only home she has ever known to the seaside idyll of Sanditon. Carried along by the enthusiasm of entrepreneur Tom Parker for the development of the once small fishing village into a fashionable seaside resort, Charlotte quickly finds herself at the heart of a diverse and unexpected community.

Tonight, in the eighth and final edition, it is the night of the Midsummer Ball, where romantic interests are finally resolved. However, the fate of Sanditon is in the balance when events conspire to leave Charlotte and the Parker family facing down impossible choices.

He meets Lisa in the finals of a renowned eloquence contest where they debate the government’s responsibility with regards to the current state of the suburbs. Demba, the eldest, lives to the rhythm of drug deals and the street.

Their little brother Noumouké, 15, is still trying to find his way and must choose which of his brothers’ footsteps to follow. A fight, a gunshot, a tragedy.

The lost Pharaohs of the Nile, Channel 4 at 8pm

For nearly 100 years, ancient Egypt was ruled by a dynasty known as the Black Pharaohs.

They came from the Kingdom of Kush to the south of Egypt, in what is now Sudan. According to the Egyptians, Kush was an inferior backwater – but if that were true, then how did the Black Pharaohs come to rule Egypt?

Unravelling the mysteries of Kush has never been easy, as civil war and political turmoil have kept outsiders away. But now, more than 30 international teams of archaeologists are working with Sudan’s Department of Antiquities to excavate magnificent sites along the Sudanese Nile Valley, from pyramids to temples.

Featuring the world’s first investigation of the submerged burial chambers of a pyramid, the discovery of what appears to be a major Black Pharaoh power base near the great temple of Jebel Barkal – and using drones to show the full extent of the Black Pharaohs’ kingdom for the first time – the experts in this documentary challenge the view that Egypt is Africa’s only ‘great’ civilisation, providing evidence that the Black Pharaohs’ Kingdom of Kush was a major ancient African superpower that, until now, has been overlooked by history.

Strictly Come Dancing: The Results Show, BBC One at 7.15pm

Tess Daly and Claudia Winklemen present the second instalment of this weekend’s Strictly Come Dancing spectacular – and the time is ticking for a third couple to leave the competition.

Last night 13 couples shone, sparkled and spun across the dancefloor, determined to prove they have what it takes to reach the next Strictly stage.

After the votes have been counted and added to the leader board, the two couples with the lowest scores must compete in the dance-off. It will then be up to the ballroom bigwigs Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse to decide which duo will foxtrot into next week, and who will be the third couple to say goodbye.

This week the Strictly pros come together to wow the audience with an electric group performance. Grammy Award-winning country singer Keith Urban will also be in the studio, performing Never Comin’ Down.
