Sky Arts celebrate Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell 75: A Birthday Celebration airs this weekend.
Tomorrow evening Sky Arts broadcast Joni Mitchell 75: A Birthday Celebration.
An all-star line up, including Chaka Khan, Norah Jones, Seal, Rufus Wainwright and James Taylor perform some of Joni Mitchell’s finest songs to mark her 75th birthday last year.
The programme will also include special behind-the-scenes interviews, the concert was recorded over two nights at the Music Center in Los Angeles in November 2018.
Known for emotionally honest songs like Big Yellow Taxi, that would resonate with generations to come, the performers pay tribute to her five decades of music – even inviting her on stage at one point to sing her Happy Birthday.
Roberta Joan Mitchell née Anderson was born on November 7th, 1943. The Canadian singer-songwriter drew her creative inspirations from folk, pop, rock, and jazz.
Mitchell’s songs often reflect social and environmental ideals as well as her feelings about romance, confusion, disillusionment, and joy. Joni began singing in small nightclubs in her hometown and throughout western Canada, before busking in the streets and nightclubs of Toronto, Ontario. In the mid-1960s she relocated to the United States and began touring.
She has received many accolades, including nine Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
