Jane Hazlegrove on “really frightening” Corrie return
The actress plays Bernie Winter in the ITV, STV and UTV aired soap.
Jane recently returned to the show in the role of Gemma Winter’s mum Bernie, but her first foray onto the cobbles saw her play Sue Clayton more than 30 years ago.
“Oh my word, that’s the sort of arrogance of youth, I wasn’t nervous at all then,” she admitted in reference to her earlier role. “But now, a woman in my 50s, it was really frightening, because it’s Coronation Street.”
Speaking to Lorraine Kelly for her ITV morning show, Jane went on to note that the soap is a “big gig” and that she had been anxious not to let herself or the show down.
“I was absolutely petrified, but dear Dolly and Sam, who play Gemma and Chesney, they just sort of push me around and guide me to the green room and work out when I need a cup of tea, and things like that. It’s pretty full on.”
Despite two stints with the street Jane is probably best known for her role as paramedic Kathleen ‘Dixie’ Dixon in Casualty, which she primarily played between 2006-2016.
The actress’s other credits include Doctors, London’s Burning and Silent Witness.
