Winners of the Rose d’Or awards 2019 announced

The winners of The Rose d’Or Awards were announced during a star-studded ceremony hosted by Sir Lenny Henry at Kings Place, London last night.

The awards, celebrating their 58th year, reward and honour achievement in entertainment programming across ten categories, including: Comedy, Drama, Comedy Drama or Sitcom, Soap or Telenovela, Arts, Reality and Factual Entertainment, and Studio Entertainment.

Ricky Gervais was presented with the 2019 Rose d’Or Performance of the Year Award acknowledging his ground-breaking performance as Tony in After Life, the Netflix series which he also writes and directs. His co-star Diane Morgan was in attendance to present the prestigious award to him on the night.

“I can’t believe I was chosen from all the amazing performances in both drama and comedy from all over the world this year. Truly flattered. This might be my favourite honour of my career.” – Ricky Gervais

The Rose d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award, marking an ‘exceptional contribution’ to the entertainment industry, was this year gifted to the ‘first lady of German TV’, Maren Kroymann whose some 60 film and television roles include Night Nurse Kroymann, Hounded and Free Fall.

“I am so happy and grateful to be receiving this international acclaim for the artistic journey I’ve been on. My vision of female strength has not always been shared by the mainstream. Getting rewarded for my attitude – as well as for my vivid but sometimes unexpected career – is more than compelling.” – Maren Kroymann

Ricky and Maren join a list of past winners of the Rose d’Or Special Awards including Joanna Lumley, James Corden, Angela Lansbury, Jan Böhmermann and John Cleese.

It was also a big night for critically acclaimed series Chernobyl, which was named the outstanding entertainment show of 2019 with The Golden Rose Award. The Sky Atlantic and HBO historical drama series also won in the Drama category seeing off competition from Killing Eve, Succession, Years and Years, 8 Days and Escape at Dannemora.

The newly introduced Audio Entertainment category was won by BBC World Service’s 13 Minutes to the Moon, a re-telling of the Apollo 11 moon landing, whose theme tune was composed by award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, his first ever podcast composition. Orphans of a Nation, the Brazilian drama from Globo, won in the Soaps and Telenovelas category, while the Children and Youth award was presented to Norwegian series ZombieLars, which mixes slapstick gags with social commentary.

The Studio Entertainment award was presented to BBC One’s Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, with the Comedy category going to the fast-paced and irreverent Canadian series Baroness von Sketch Show and the Comedy Drama and Sitcom to Spanish series Arde Madrid.
