Eamonn Holmes has issued a statement on-air following a backlash to comments he made linking the coronavirus and 5G technology.
In Monday’s edition of ITV’s This Morning, Holmes queried whether the mainstream media should be “immediately slapping” down the conspiracy theory claims regarding the coronavirus pandemic and 5G technology. His comments have so far attracted 419 complaints to media regulator Ofcom.
During Tuesday’s broadcast of This Morning, the host addressed the issue, reading off a statement. In the statement he began by saying he wanted to “clarify some comments” that he claims some may have misinterpreted. He went on to say that he and Alice Beer, who he was having the discussion with on Monday, that there is no connection between 5G and the coronavirus.
I want to clarify some comments that some of you may have misinterpreted from me yesterday, around conspiracy theories and coronavirus and this involved the roll-out of 5G.
Both Alice Beer and I agreed in a discussion on this very programme on fake news that it’s not true and there is no connection between the present national health emergency and 5G, and to suggest otherwise would be wrong and indeed it could be dangerous.
Every theory relating to such a connection has been proven to be false and we would like to emphasise that. However many people are rightly concerned and are looking for answers and that’s simply what I was trying to do, to impart yesterday.
But for the avoidance of any doubt I want to make it completely clear there’s no scientific evidence to substantiate any of those 5G theories. I hope that clears that up. – Eamonn Holmes
Ofcom has also issued a statement saying that they are “assessing this programme in full as a priority.” ITV has not responded directly to the story, opting to release a copy of what Eamonn read out this morning.
Broadcasters in the UK had been warned by Ofcom not to spread or promote conspiracy theories surrounding the coronavirus. Local television channel London Live is currently under investigation for broadcasting an interview with renowned conspiracy theorist David Icke.
