Why we want more Merlin
As Merlin continues to pull in the viewers to its Saturday evening slot on BBC One we list several reasons why we think the series should get a second season.
New Saturday evening family drama Merlin is continuing its first season run on BBC One and enjoying good ratings. Each week the series usually increases its ratings, bar one or two episodes, despite the fact that early episodes were continually moved around the schedules. As yet there is no word on whether Merlin will be back for a second season even though the show has proved a popular fixture of Saturday evenings. So we list a few reasons why we feel Merlin should get a second season.
Our first reason is the writing on the series which is surprisingly good. For a family drama, on a Saturday evening, the scripts so far have been very good and the storylines easy to follow. Offhand I can’t think of one episode, bar the opening one, where the script hasn’t been good. Opening episodes are always tricky to pull off successfully and so it’s hardly surprising it wasn’t as good as subsequent episodes.
It’s rather enjoyable and easy to follow. It’s the kind of drama you can sit down in front off and really enjoy without having to pay much attention to the twists and turns off it. In this instance it’s a good thing because it means you can spend more time enjoying what’s happening.
The acting is also good with Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, Colin Morgan and Bradley James all deserving special mention while Anthony Head and Richard Wilson are excellent in their roles too. Although Katie McGrath is underused and so we’re hoping a second season would feature her in a more prominent role.
It’s better than Robin Hood. That may be harsh to the cast of Robin Hood but we feel it’s far superior to its Saturday night cousin. We’ve managed to stay tuned to Merlin through all of its episodes so far while with Robin Hood we gave up after five episodes.
The series has plenty of potential and the story of Merlin and Arthur on their journey to their respective destinies is an interesting one. It’s one which will allow for plenty of future dramatic and gripping episodes. The story of King Arthur, Merlin, The Round Table and Camelot is one that has universal appeal and one that fires the imagination. There’s so much you can do with the story and so many events to cover from the various stories that we think the series just has to continue.
Certain events in this season have obviously set the ground work for future event such as the return of Lancelot to Camelot and Modred, the druid boy with the telepathetic gift. There is slowly a arc, of sorts, and a mythology developing in the show and it needs time to develop and grow and a second season would allow more pieces to fall into place with that mythology.
