Matt Smith aka 11th Doctor

In a special edition of the behind-the-scenes documentary series Doctor Who Confidental Matt Smith was confirmed as the 11th actor to play the role of the Doctor in the hit BBC series Doctor Who. The announcement ends weeks of speculation over who’ll take on the role after current Who actor David Tennant announced he was stepping down from the role. The confirmation that Matt Smith will play the Doctor also puts the constant tabloid rumours firmly in the “rubbish” category.

Amongst the actors tipped to take over from Tennant, by the tabloids, were James Nesbit, Russell Tovey, Patterson Joseph, John Simm and Colin Salmon. Actors Russell Tovey, John Simm and Colin Salmon have all guest-starred in the revived Doctor Who with Simm playing the renegade Time-Lord, The Master, an old foe of the Doctors’.

Filming for the fifth season of Doctor Who will begin in the summer with transmission likely to start around Easter 2010. Before Matt Smith takes on the role David Tennant will appear in four more specials, the last of which is likely to be the 2009 Christmas Special. There’s been no announcement, as yet, on who will play the role of the 11th Doctor’s companion. Doubtless now the 11th Doctor has been confirmed the tabloid press will turn their speculation towards casting for the companion’s role.
