PM defends discussions with Murdochs
Prime Minister David Cameron has said there was “no grand deal” between him and the Murdochs.
The PM appeared on The Andrew Marr Show (BBC One) this morning to speak about a range of issues ahead of the local elections this Thursday.
Asked if it was true that he had discussed the BSkyB takeover bid with James Murdoch, he confirmed that he did but never had “inappropriate conversations” with anyone about the bid. It was revealed last week that the PM had a dinner with James Murdoch at the home of Rebekah Brooks, who was chief executive officer of News International at the time.
On the issue of Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt he says that the best way to see if there is any wrongdoing is through the Leveson Inquiry. Hunt’s special advisor, Adam Smith, resigned last week after it was revealed he had been in frequent contact with News Corporation over the status of the BSkyB takeover bid.
Cameron insisted that he will act if it transpires there has been a breach of the ministerial code. The Labour party believe that the PM is ‘hiding’ behind the Leveson Inquiry and are demanding that he makes a statement to the House of Commons on the issue.
