Trek writer supports Ellison lawsuit

CBS ParamountFellow Star Trek writer David Gerrold has spoken out in support of Harlan Ellison over the writers lawusuit against CBC Paramount following internet speculation surrounding the lawsuit.

Writer David Gerrold has given his support to fellow Star Trek writer Harlan Ellison who earlier this CBS Paramountweek launched a lawsuit against CBS Paramount for “merchandise, publishing” and other “exploitations” regarding his Star Trek episode City at the Edge of Forever. The episode is one of several original series episodes highly regarded by Trek fans. Following the news that Ellison was suing CBS Paramount regarding his episode of Star Trek speculation on many Trek forums grew and some suggested the lawsuit was connected to the forthcoming Star Trek film by JJ Abrams, however, this has seemingly be debunked by some sources.

“A lot of people are repeating a lot of BS about Harlan Ellison, creating a mental image of him as some kind of cranky belligerent dwarf on a rampage. That’s just not true. I know Harlan, I’ve known him for over forty years. Harlan Ellison isn’t the only writer who is affected by this. Other Star Trek writers like DC Fontana (who wrote more episodes of the original series than anyone else and who created the characters of Sarek and Amanda) will also benefit. It is also likely that writers who worked on other series will benefit from the precedent.” – David Gerrold posting on http://trekmovie.com/.

David Gerrold wrote another popular episode of Star Trek, The Trouble with Tribbles, and writing on a blog defended Ellison for bringing the lawsuit and said if it was successful it wouldn’t just benefit Ellison but would also benefit himself and other original series writers such as DC Fontana.
