Telly Today: Bake Off for a good cause and French comedy

Tuesday viewing highlights in Telly Today for March 6th with ATV Today Editor Doug Lambert.

One to Watch: Stand Up To Cancer – The Great British Bake Off, Channel 4, 8pm

The Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 screenswith five special Stand Up To Cancer episodes.

In each edition, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding are joined by four different celebrities aiming to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with their baking skills. Over five episodes, Paul and Prue set 15 exciting new baking challenges, pushing the celebrities to their baking limits. But only one celebrity per episode will be awarded the coveted star baker apron.

In the first episode, the four brave celebrities ushered into the Bake Off tent are comedian Harry Hill, Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp, actor and writer Roisin Conaty, and broadcaster Bill Turnbull. The first challenge is a bake sale classic – cupcakes. The technical challenge is fiery.

there’s a demanding showstopper challenge – a 3D biscuit scene recreating the best day of their life. So who will fall flat and who will rise to the occasion to be crowned star baker?

Elizabeth: Our Queen – Strong and Steady, Channel 5, 10pm

In this the fifth episode of the eight-part series Channel 5 mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 65-years on the throne.

The longest serving monarch in British history is relfected upon in this in-depth series which chronicles her life with interviews from those whom have been close to her in one form or another. From former Prime Ministers to some of her dearest friends and royal household members the show finds out how The Queen ticks from those who know her best.

Topics covered range from Charles and Diana, to Andrew and Sarah and the more recent happier unions of her grandchildren. Using personal testimony and eye-witness accounts, plus a look into rare documents and archive footage this episode sees the monarchy commanding new levels of popularity with the 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana, including footage unseen for over 30 years.


Here and Now, Sky Atlantic, 9pm

Alan Ball’s engaging and provocative drama continues, as the family patriarch and respected philosophy professor, Greg, finds himself lost in the wilderness on the way to an ethics convention.

Meanwhile, his conflict-resolution consultant wife, Ashley is thrust into the media spotlight after the high school in which she practises becomes the scene of a hate crime. Elsewhere, adopted son Duc reveals his secret to staying in control while at a mountain bike race with friends – one that a fellow life coach decides to test.


Portrait Artist of the Year 2018, Sky Arts, 8pm

In the last of the heats, comedian and actress Meera Syal, renowned actor and director Sir Derek Jacobi and journalist and television presenter Kirsty Wark sit for the final group of portrait artists.

As ever, Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner will be chatting with the artists – and sitters – throughout the day as the portraits are slowly brought to life. At the end of the day, judges Tai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano and Kate Bryan will select one winning artist who will take their place in next week’s semi-final.


Shetland, BBC One, 9pm

The drama continues with this the 4th edition in this six-part series. Perez and Tosh are warned to stay away from Mathias Søderland by the Norwegian Secret Service who tell them they’re meddling in an operation they don’t understand. With Søderland their prime suspect for Sally McColl’s murder, Perez and Tosh won’t be bullied. However, their investigation is suddenly derailed by a shocking discovery.

A deflated Perez returns to Shetland to face some difficult questions, not only from procurator fiscal Rhona but also Duncan, who is concerned about Cassie’s growing closeness to Alan Killick.

Meanwhile, Thomas’ and Kate’s burgeoning relationship hits the rocks when she finds something chilling in his belongings. Unnerved, Kate tells a devastated Thomas that their one-night stand was a mistake. At Sally’s memorial service her father Drew speaks eloquently, while Perez watches from a distance. Thomas turns up unannounced to try to talk to Kate, but only succeeds in making a scene, causing further upset for all.


Gad Elmaleh: American Dream, from today on Netflix

French comedy sensation Gad Elmaleh is back on Netflix with his second original stand-up comedy special, Gad Elmaleh: American Dream.

Filmed at The Town Hall in New York City, Gad throws his audience into hysterics as he recalls his experiences moving from Paris to New York, struggling to flirt with women in New York clubs, and how he wants to visit the Paris that Americans always talk about, but doesn’t really exist. Gad Elmaleh: American Dream marks the comedian’s first full English-language stand-up special.
