BBC axe children's programming from main channels
Blue Peter will no longer air on BBC One after 53 years.
The iconic children’s programme along with all other kids’ programmes will now only air on CBBC and CBeebies.
The move announced today comes as the BBC looks set to make cuts from its budget as part of Delivering Quality First. After the licence fee was frozen, the BBC set out plans to ‘live within their means’, which forms a key part of the DQF.
The main points they set out are; increase the distinctiveness and quality of BBC output, improve value for money, set new standards of openness and transparency and do more to serve all audiences.
One of the biggest announcements to come out of the BBC Trust’s final conclusions is that children’s programming will no longer air on BBC One or BBC Two. The change won’t happen until the digital switchover is complete so that all the UK can receive CBBC and CBeebies.
We are mindful however that the re-scheduling may risk some short term confusion among viewers about where to find children’s output. We have therefore asked the Executive to ensure there is sufficient cross-promotion and marketing of the changes prior to their re-scheduling, to help mitigate any possible audience impact. – BBC
There had been fears that Blue Peter could be axed all together after a drop in ratings over the years. BBC head of press reaffirmed on Twitter that Blue Peter had not been axed, just that it is moving from the main channel.
The show is currently presented by Helen Skelton and Barney Harwood.
