Jemma Donovan talks Neighbours role
Jemma Donovan is the latest in a line of Donovan’s to appear in the long-running cul-de-sac based soap opera.
Jemma Donovan opened up about her new part in Neighbours, following in her father and grandfather’s footsteps in joining the famous Aussie soap. Ahead of her debut as Harlow Robinson, she spoke to ITV show Lorraine about moving abroad to follow her dream of being in showbiz.
“It’s crazy. It’s such an experience. I’m loving it. I’m loving it. It’s weird moving to another country and kind of leaving my family, that was one step of it any way, I’m having the best time.”
On living in Melbourne, Jemma added: “All of my dad’s side of the family are there, so it’s great. It’s not like I’m alone.”
Father, Jason, of course is still fondly remembered for his Neighbours role of Scott Robinson and his union with Charlene Ramsay played by pop star Kylie Minogue. On her dad’s reaction to Jemma joining the Reg Watson created saga she noted:
“He started crying when he found out. He was just so happy for me. He is a great supporter. I love having him by my side, which is great.
Jason Donovan starred in Neighbours as Scott Robinson.
On whether performing runs in the family Jemma believed it does. Her grandfather, Jason’s dad, Terence appeared as Doug Wilis in the saga for many years too. He also had a long television career in Australia appearing in several big shows of the 70s and 80s including police drama Cop Shop.
“I always loved it when I was younger. I kind of stopped it for a little bit to do my school and stuff. I didn’t know whether I wanted to pursue it but then I just got to a point when I thought this is what I want to do… I was definitely surrounded by it a lot when I was younger.”
She admitted she had never been to the Neighbours set before. She added: “It was surreal going in. The first time I went in, I was just surrounded by all the cast for a read through, it was the most terrifying thing ever. But it was great, everyone is so lovely. They are kind of relaxed and they were really welcoming.” She added she didn’t know how long she was going to be starring in the soap at this point of time. Jemma also revealed singing was one of her passions too, so a possible soap to pop star moment ahead?
“You learn so much, it’s intense, it’s quick… It’s so cool, it’s so much fun. I don’t want to come home. It’s a great training ground… I feel so lucky.”
