Russell Tovey to star in ITV drama Because the Night

Filming begins in London on Because the Night, a four-part limited series for ITV from Euston Films.

Because the Night’s central character is well-meaning but directionless Nathan, who has a terrible secret he’s long prayed would stay buried and for which he’s long worked hard to make recompense.

With filming on Neil Cross’s new thriller now underway, ITV has announced that Nathan will be played by Russell Tovey, who has many acting credits to his name but was most recently seen on the Beeb in Russell T Davies’s Years and Years.

“Because the Night is going to challenge me as an actor more than I’ve ever been challenged before. As a web of lies, that he thought was dead and buried, comes back to haunt Nathan, he sinks deeper and deeper into the horror of the event that happened ten years ago. I cannot wait to start filming and join this amazing team and cast.” – Russell Tovey

Almost a decade into his new and devoted married life, Nathan is rocked to the core when Bob, played by Bertie Carvel, an unwelcome face from the past, turns up on his doorstep with some shocking news…

This triggers a series of catastrophic decisions which ITV say will ‘drive a tense and compelling narrative of psychological suspense, dread, love and possible redemption’.

The cast also includes Amrita Acharia as Holly, Nina Toussaint White as Jackie and Paul Bazely as Graham.

“Nathan, Bob and Holly have been with me for many years. I couldn’t be more excited to see them brought to life by Russell Tovey, Bertie Carvel and Amrita Acharia.” – Neil Cross

Because the Night was inspired by the novel Burial, also written by Neil Cross who is best known as the creator of the hit BBC crime drama Luther. Filming will take place until December with the series airing on ITV at some point next year.
