New Poll Shows Public Support Gay Marriage
Another poll has shown that the majority of people in the UK support gay marriage.
A series of polls have consistently put public support for same-sex as being in the majority despite the objections of religious leaders who claim allowing gay & lesbian couples to marry will undermine the institution and society as a whole. Earlier today the Church of England once again criticised the possible legalisation of gay marriage in England and Wales but a new poll has put public support for marriage equality at 71%.
The poll was conducted by YouGov for Stonewall; the gay lobby group. The poll found that 71% of respondents approved of the government’s plans to allow gay marriages. The same number said that faiths which wish to conduct gay wedding ceremonies should be allowed to do so – something not currently contained within the government’s proposals.
Interestingly the poll also reveals that three out of every five people of faith support the government’s plans to extend marriage to gay and lesbian couples – despite the fact that some leaders within the Catholic Church & Church of England are so vehemently opposed to the plans. The poll also reveals that three of out five respondents felt there was still public prejudice against the LGBT community and 77% felt the media relied on clichéd stereotypes of gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
