EastEnders: Lorraine Newman confirmed as executive producer

Lorraine Newman has been unveiled as the new executive producer for EastEnders.
She had been in the position since Bryan Kirkwood left earlier this year but today the BBC has confirmed she will now remain the role permanently with immediate effect. Lorraine has been with the soap for nearly 20 years and has covered a number of roles including series producer.

“It is an absolute honour to be taking on the role of Executive Producer at EastEnders on a permanent basis. My passion for EastEnders was ignited during my first stint on the show as Script Secretary at the age of 19 and this passion has continued to grow ever since. I am looking forward to leading a talented creative team, cast and crew into 2013.” – Lorraine Newman

Kirkwood held the position for two years from 2010 – 2012 but come under heavy criticism for focusing on teenage characters and the controversial baby swap storyline, prompting thousands of complaints to the BBC. Controller of BBC Drama, John Yorke, has praised Lorraine’s work and the “positioning” of the show for the autumn.

Newman is currently overseeing the return of iconic EastEnders character Sharon Watts, played by Letitia Dean. Filming began for her dramatic return earlier this month.
