The Hollywood Reporter says that Guthrie, who currently presents the third hour of the popular morning show, has been offered a chance of promotion to join Matt Lauer for the main programme.
Its widely reported that Ann Curry will be leaving ‘Today’ after a year and management are still negotiating an exit deal for her.
NBC has yet to comment on the speculation although insiders seem certain that Curry will remain with NBC News. Curry had been news anchor for 14 years and was promoted to the top job after Meredith Vieira quit in 2011.
Despite Vieira leaving she has made several appearances and is now ‘special correspondent’, recently covering the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London alongside Lauer. Notably Curry was not invited for Today’s coverage of the celebrations. Vieira will also be back for the Olympic games, which kick-off in a months time.
Traditionally all the Today show team travel to the host city, this year in London, although it is not known yet if Curry will be joining the rest of the team as talk of her departure continues.
