Morecambe And Wise revisited by GOLD

Britain’s greatest ever double act return is to return to UK screens next month as GOLD air a five-part series Bring Me Morecambe and Wise to celebrate the comedy genius and legacy of Eric and Ernie.

The documentary series provides a fascinating insight into the iconic comedy duo, showcasing best-loved, rare and never seen before sketches and routines.

With first hand testimony from Eric Morecambe’s wife, Joan, a variety of celebrity fans and those who knew the duo best, the series blends comment with rare and unseen footage, providing a unique view of the pair whose comedy partnership lasted 43 years. Each episode also features famous sketches and routines, revealing why Eric and Ernie’s popularity endures to this day.

The first episode uncovers an early incarnation of one of their most classic sketches, which even their nearest and dearest didn’t know existed. It also recalls the moment that the nation discovered news reader Angela Rippon had legs, and celebrates Eric’s love of props, from a ventriloquist dummy to the infamous curtain.

Bring Me Morecambe and Wise also explains how the comedy legends were brought together by Eric’s mum in 1939, after the two teenage comics met during auditions for Jack Hylton for a variety tour. The series follows their career performing together from 1941 including their original 1950s BBC series which flopped, a return to TV and success with ATV in the 60s before defecting back to BBC One and ending their TV career at Thames. It also covers the ill-health and death of Eric Morecambe in 1984. With repeats in the 1990s on the BBC and ITV they became confirmed as the kings of British comedy with famous sketches such as Singin’ in the Rain, The Grieg Piano Concerto and The Breakfast Sketch.

Alongside family members, the series also features a host of famous fans including; Ben Elton, David Baddiel, Tamsin Greig, Angela Rippon,Stephen Mangan, Barry Cryer, Barry Norman plus Lord Grade who managed their early career alongside Billy Marsh.

Bring Me Morecambe and Wise begins on Tuesday 27th November, 9pm, GOLD
