Liverpool Celebrates Brookside’s 30th Anniversary

November 2^nd 1982 saw the television landscape change, a new forth channel, Richard Whiteley unleashed onto national television and a revolutionary soap opera began.

To mark thirty years since Brookside launched on Channel 4 the Museum of Liverpool is to celebrate the cul-de-sac saga with a series of events. The show, produced by Mersey Television – now Lime Pictures – was produced in a real-life close on the outskirts of the North West City.

The events are part of a day celebrating Liverpool’s literary heritage. The exhibition looks at how writers have drawn on the city and particularly its love of storytelling to create world renowned drama and fiction.

The displays show how writers have found inspiration in Liverpool’s turbulent history and how key works have changed national and international perceptions of the city.

The season uses specially commissioned film and multimedia pieces to look at the variety of literary works that have come out of the city in the last 50 years.

Brookside is celebrated on Sunday November 4^th with a drop in session entitled ‘Brookside Memories’ where fans can meet and discuss the serial’s many storylines.

In Writing Liverpool contributing writers including Jimmy McGovern, Alan Bleasdale, Phil Redmond and Willy Russell discuss productions from the city, including 21-years of Brookside plots.

In Conversation With Phil Redmond

A 90-minute question and answers session with the man who created numerous series for television including Grange Hill and Hollyoaks. It will of course be his major creation of the show originally intended to be called Meadowcroft that will take centrestage.

Brookside Close Crafternoon

In 1987 Brookside Close resident Ralf created a miniature model of the cul-de-sac, now The Museum of Liverpool intends to make their own version with visitors’ help. Of course, this Brookside Close should have no need to worry about cults, gas explosions or helicopters falling out of the sky.
