Stand Up To Cancer sees £8 Million raised
Stand Up To Cancer donation lines closed at the end of November with the final fundraising total for the campaign standing at a staggering £8m, which Channel 4 state has made the campaign the most successful charity fundraiser on UK commercial TV since its beginnings in 1955.
The campaign, a new fundraising collaboration between Cancer Research UK, Channel 4 and Stand Up to Cancer US, raises money to boost funds for collaborative cancer studies and trials to turn breakthroughs in the lab into breakthroughs in our hospitals. Stand Up To Cancer is a programme of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which began in the USA in 2008 and has since raised more than $260m for cancer research.
Friday the 19th October saw stars from television, music and film come together to Stand Up To Cancer with an audience reach of 7.8m. The live fundraising event was hosted by Davina McCall, Alan Carr and Dr Christian Jessen and featured moving real life stories as well as appearances from celebrities including Samuel L Jackson, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Piven, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole and Heidi Klum.
Cancer Research UK has now begun the process of assessing the research proposals received and the task of allocating the funds raised to new clinical trials.
