Syfy has announced it will not be renewing Stargate Universe for a third season effectively cancelling the series. The news may come as a shock to some who had expected Syfy to give Universe a third season but anyone who had been following the ratings closely would have seen the writing on the wall. Universe had been pulling low figures for a while with some episodes dipping below 1 million viewers. It’s Tuesday evening companion, Caprica, has also been axed by Syfy for the same reason.
Stargate Universe will return next year for the remainder of its season two episodes – 10 episodes. After that though the franchise on television will be off-the-air unless another broadcaster steps in and saves the show; which does seem unlikely. The franchise consists of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe and moved to Syfy in 2002.
