Final Ratings for Doctor Who Christmas Special Released

Doctor WhoThe final consolidated ratings for The Snowmen, this year’s Christmas Special of Doctor Who, have been released.

Final ratings are far more accurate than overnight figures because they include those viewers who recorded the programme and watched later. That’s why programmes often rise in the ratings when final figures are released and Doctor Who routinely gains more than 1.5 million viewers through consolidated figures.

The Snowmen episode has now been confirmed as 9.87 million viewers – just shy of 10 million viewers. The figure makes Doctor Who the 4th most watched programme of Christmas Day with BBC soap EastEnders taking the crown followed by Call the Midwife and then The Royle Family. ITV‘s prestigious drama Downton Abbey, which won the Christmas Day ratings last year, slipped this year taking 9.7 million viewers.

The final figure for The Snowmen is good considering it aired at the earlier time of 5.15. The episode guest starred Richard E Grant and Sir Ian McKellen lent his vocal talents for the festive special while Jenna Louise Coleman re-joined Matt Smith following her introduction in the season seven opener Asylum of the Daleks.
