The New Normal and Ellen DeGeneres Win People Choice Awards
NBC‘s new comedy The New Normal and daytime TV host Ellen DeGeneres were amongst the LGBT winners at the People’s Choice Awards.
Comedy The New Normal, created by Glee’s Ryan Murphy, stars Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannnells and is described as a ‘heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help them have children’.
The modestly rated comedy has been picked up for a full season by NBC and is widely seen as a strong contender for a second season renewal. The fact it’s won Favourite New TV Comedy as the People’s Choice Awards may also work in its favour when NBC makes its decision on whether or not to order a second run.
Meanwhile Chris Colfer won Favourite Comedic Actor at the People’s Choice Awards for his role of Kurt in Fox’s Glee. The openly gay actor has played the gay character of Kurt since the show’s launch and the character’s on/off romance with Blaine (Darren Criss) is closely followed by the musical comedies fans. At one point it did appear as though Colfer, and other cast members, would be written out of Glee at the conclusion of its third series and possibly placed in a spin-off. However, the idea of a spin-off has since been abandoned by Fox and Colfer remains part of the Glee cast.
Chat-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been voted Favourite Daytime TV Host. The comedian, who appeared in the self-titled sitcom Ellen (1994 – 1998), has presented her syndicated chat-show – The Ellen DeGeneres Show – since 2003 and has attracted stars such as Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Justin Bieber, Neil Patrick Harris, Simon Cowell, Rihanna as well as First Lady, Michelle Obama.
