Unofficial figures reveal the fourth season of Torchwood launched on BBC One at 9pm last night with 4.8 million viewers. The episode beat drama Single Handed on ITV1 at the same time by 1.3 million viewers and gets the series off to a good start. Torchwood Miracle Day sees actors John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Kai Owen reprise their respective roles joined by new cast members such as Bill Pullman.

When final figures are released the 4.8 million figure is likely to rise and downloads from the BBC’s iPlayer service will also boost figures.
