BBC Announces End Of Being Human

The fifth season of BBC Three’s supernatural drama Being Human is to be its last the corporation has revealed.

In a similar way to the end of Merlin the BBC have only confirmed the current series of Being Human is its last after transmission has already begun. The supernatural drama, created by Toby Whithouse, returned on Sunday evening to 731,000 viewers which is its lowest season premier since its first full season. The BBC announced the end of Being Human today in a press release.

It’s featured some truly exceptional actors and storylines through the years and I’d like to thank Toby and the production team for their vision and passion. The demise of Being Human shouldn’t be all that surprising given recent cut backs at the BBC which have hit the drama budget for BBC Three. It was recently confirmed the lesbian drama service Lip Service had been axed after just two seasons and supernatural series The Fades was not renewed for a second season despite strong ratings and good reviews. The Fades also received a BAFTA award but it was reported it was axed in order to bring back Being Human for a fifth season.

The fifth series of Being Human stars Damien Molony, Michael Socha and Kate Bracken with Whitechapel actor Phil Davis. The original 2008 pilot starred Russell Tovey, Andrea Riseborough and Guy Flanagan. When the supernatural drama returned in 2009 for its first full series only Tovey remained with Lenora Crichlow and Aiden Turner joining the series.

Actor Aiden Turner bowed out of Being Human at the end of its third season as did Sinead Keenan. Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow both bowed out during its fourth season. The award-winning series has been successfully remade for American audiences; it airs on Syfy in America and stars Sam Witwer, Meeghan Rath and Sam Huntington. The remake is currently in its third series.
