NUJ announce 18 February as BBC strike date
Strike date for beeb news staff revealed.
The National Union of Journalists have announced that BBC journalists will strike on the 18th of February unless the corporation agrees to end compulsory redundancies and redeploy the posts under an agreed scheme.
The BBC is continuing to restructure the corporation as part of the Delivering Quality First report, which was created so the BBC can live within its means as the money they receive from the television licence remains frozen. This has led to a number of job losses and redeployment of other staff.
The BBC is prepared to waste public money on needless redundancies rather than secure redeployment opportunities for those at risk. This demonstrates the significant failures of some managers to uphold key aspects of the redeployment agreement, let alone the spirit of the deal. – Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary
A spokesperson for the BBC told BBC News it was “disappointing the NUJ have chosen to take this action.” The action begins this Friday as the NUJ agreed that BBC members should work to rule, meaning they should do the minimum amount needed.
