Frank Spotnitz hopeful for new X Files movie

X Files writer and producer Frank Spotnitz is hopeful that a third film, based on the television series, will be produced at some point in the series.
The second X Files film, I Want to Believe, was released in 2008 but was not a success at the Box Office or with critics. The standalone plot of the film, as opposed to the story-arc of the X Files itself, was criticised but should a new film happen writer Frank Spotnitz has stated the alien conspiracy would be its focus.
“It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonization of Earth,….David and Gillian feel the same. I have a clear idea of how it would go, and I’ve been talking to Chris Carter about it for a long time…..There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie. The X Files starred Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny and aired on Fox between 1993 and 2002 for nine seasons clocking up 202 episodes. It blended “monster of the week” episodes with “story-arc” episodes involving a far-reaching government conspiracy to hide the truth of aliens from the general public – and to keep far darker secrets hidden as well. The first X Files film was released in 1998 between the fifth and sixth seasons – the sixth season picks up from where the movie finishes. Gillian Anderson recently stated she would be open to reprise her role of Dana Scully in a future movie.
