Borgen Returning To BBC Four

The critically acclaimed Danish political drama Borgen, starring Sidse Babett Knudsen, will return to BBC Four for its third season.

The digital channel has acquired the rights to the third season of Borgen which is currently broadcasting in its home country of Denmark on broadcaster DR. Series creator Adam Price has previously hinted the third season of Borgen would likely be its last.

“Strong characters coupled with delicately woven personal and political storylines have kept our audiences hooked on a Saturday night, and the final season will be equally as engrossing,” – Richard Klein, controller of BBC Four.

Borgen has proven to be a hit not only for Danish broadcaster DR and BBC Four but also for broadcasters across Europe. Television viewers appetite for Scandinavian drama has made Borgen a huge international success. The series has captured a worldwide audience much in the same way as The Killing and The Bridge although both of those drama’s are detective rather than political.

The Killing and The Bridge have both been remade/being remade for domestic audiences in different countries; The Killing in America where a third series is currently in production. Earlier this week FX announced it was developing a remake of The Bridge while in the UK Sky Atlantic is remaking the detective thriller as The Tunnel.

A remake of Borgen was supposedly in development for NBC in late 2011.
