Le Vell appears in court on child sex charges
Coronation Street‘s Michael Le Vell appeared in court this morning (27 February) faced with child sex charges.
Le Vell, who has played Weatherfield mechanic Kevin Webster since 1983, spoke only to give his name and address at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.
He has now been bailed to appear again at court on Wednesday, March 20, according to BBC News.
The actor has been charged with 19 offences which include raping a child, indecent assault of a child and sexual activity with a child.
ITV bosses have confirmed that he will not appear in any further episodes of Coronation Street throughout the legal proceedings.
In a statement, Le Vell insisted on his innocence and vowed to clear his name, stating: “I would like to make it quite clear that following the serious allegations that have been brought against me on Thursday, February 14, 2013, I am innocent of these charges and intend to fight them vigorously.”
Le Vell was previously arrested and questioned over the alleged offences in September 2011 but the case was dropped.
