Broadchurch finale peaks at 9.3 million viewers
The finale of Broadchurch pulled in big viewing figures as ITV confirms there will be a second series.
The detective thriller came to an end on Monday evening with an average of 8.6 million viewers (including +1) tuning in to see who killed Danny Latimer. The 65 minute special last night peaked with 9.3 million securing the series as one of the best new weekday dramas for ITV in years.
Broadchurch, which stars former Doctor Who actor David Tennant and Olivia Colman, will be back for a second series. The new series will go into production next year. As with the first series, details of the story, and which characters will return, are currently being kept tightly under wraps.
Chris Chibnall, the writer and creator of Broadchurch, has said he is “gobsmacked” by the response of viewers. “The whole Broadchurch team has been delighted and properly gobsmacked by the response from ITV viewers.”
ITV’s director of television Peter Fincham added, “From the moment the murder scene was discovered, viewers became gripped by the series, and we’ve been genuinely thrilled by the audience response. David and Olivia’s performances and Chris’s cleverly crafted scripts have created a truly compelling drama.”
