Coronation Street and EastEnders New Year Plots Spark Complaints

Coronation Street and EastEnders have both been the subject of complaints regarding storylines featured over the New Year.

Coronation Street and EastEnders have both been the subject of complaints regarding storylines featured over the New Year. The baby swap plot in EastEnders in which Ronnie (Samantha Womack) switched her baby with that of Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) has come under considerable fire.

The cot death of the baby and the swapping of it has not gone down well with viewers at all. However, it is not exactly the fire time a plot of this nature has featured in a UK soap. In 2000 a plot in Coronation Street saw Kevin Webster’s second wife Alison (Naomi Radcliffe) kidnap Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) baby after her own died.

Meanwhile some fans of Coronation Street were unhappy about a lesbian kiss between Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson). Some fans felt the kiss between the two characters would ‘glamorise’ lesbianism for teenage girls – a claim which is quite frankly ridiculous. The plot between the two characters has been hugely popular with audiences and the two were recently voted the couple Inside Soap readers would most like to see tie-the-knot in 2011.

Do you agree with the complainers? Do you think the baby-swap plot in EastEnders is a storyline too far? Do you think the kiss between Sian and Sophie was too much? Or can’t you see what all the fuss is about? Do you think its about time certain sections of the audience accept gay and lesbian couples and stop complaining?
