Agnes Nixon ‘will do everything possible’ to keep All My Children and One Life to Live alive

All My ChildrenVeteran soap writer Agnes Nixon has pledged to do everything possible’ to keep All My Children and One Life to Live alive following their cancellation by ABC earlier this week.

The two struggling soaps had been rumoured to have been on the verge of cancellation for some time now but no one expected ABC to axe them both – most thought only one would fall victim to the axe. However, the declining ratings of both serials has prompted ABC to clear them out in favour of cheaper ‘life-style’ programming. The two soaps creator, Agnes Nixon, is quite ready to write either of them off just yet.

“ABC’s decision to cancel All My Children and One Life to Live saddens me greatly….Although ABC has concluded there is no longer a place for our shows on their network, I will do everything possible to keep them alive.” Extract of a statement by Agnes Nixon.

One Life to Live was created by Nixon in 1968 and just two years later she created sister soap All My Children for ABC – the two serials have often featured crossover storylines including some with fellow ABC Lovingsoap General Hospital. Prior to creating One Life to Live in 1968 Nixon worked on soaps such as Guiding Light, Another World and As The World Turns. Her other soap credits include creating The City and Loving.

While Nixon has pledged to try and keep AMC and OLTL alive fans, who have already launched campaigns to save them, shouldn’t get their hopes up. It’s unlikely the other main broadcasters such as NBC or CBS will save them (both of which have recently cancelled soaps too) and cable channels are also unlikely to step forward. However, the two serials have a few months left before production wraps (they’ll end several months apart from each other) so anything could happen between now and then.
