Hollyoaks scoops Best Soap for the first time at British Soap Awards 2014

Hollyoaks has been named Best Soap at the British Soap Awards.

It marks the first time the Channel 4 soap has won the title at the ceremony; traditionally ITV’s Coronation Street or BBC One’s EastEnders have vied for the top prize.

The teen saga picked up four gongs including Best Villain and Best Young Performance at the awards which were held last night at the Hackney Empire in London.

Coronation Street also enjoyed a successful night with David Neilson and Julie Hesmondhalgh better known as Roy and Hayley Cropper securing a haul of awards for the show.

EastEnders bagged just two awards while ITV’s lesser-acknowledged soap Emmerdale was only recognised in one category.
