TV Cameras to be allowed in court

TV Cameras are to be allowed in court according to several newspaper reports this morning.

Currently led by Sky News, there had been a campaign for cameras to be allowed in courts to show proceedings. Sky have reported this morning that new legislation will be included in the Queen’s Speech on 9th May.

There had been opposition over the years of allowing cameras in court due to the fear that trials would become ‘events’, similar to what happens in the US. Proposals outline that just the ending and sentencing of trials would be shown.

Initially filming would only be allowed at the Court of Appeal and if all goes well could be rolled out across Crown Courts.

Last year cameras were allowed in the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, for the first time.
