John Nettles has admitted he wanted his Midsomer Murders character to be killed off. It was announced last year that Nettles was to leave the long-running ITV detective drama. The actor has played DCI Tom Barnaby since the bonkers drama launched in 1997 and by the time his final episode airs in February he will have appeared in 80 episodes.
“I wanted to die in noble fashion in the service of my country and be buried in Westminster Abbey. But Tom and his long-suffering wife Joyce will simply retire” – John Nettles quoted in The Sun
The ex Bergerac star will be replaced in Midsomer Murders by Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby. The actor made his first appearance in the role last year and once Nettles bows out in February he’ll take over on a full time basis.
