New Sherlock Drama to hint detective is gay

The BBC’s new version of Sherlock Holmes, which launches on BBC One on Sunday, will feature sly nods that will hint the famous detective is gay. The latest adaptation of the classic Victorian sleuth, first created by Arthur Conan Doyle, has been written by Doctor Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis and is set in 21st Century London, giving a new twist on the familiar tales. The new version, titled simply Sherlock, features Martin Freeman as side-kick Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch as the sleuth himself.

According to Pink News Sherlock will drop hints that the central character is gay while several other characters will assume that Sherlock and Watson are a gay couple. It won’t be the first time such things have been hinted at in a version of Sherlock Holmes. In last years’ movie by Guy Ritchie there were homoerotic undertones between Holmes, played by Robert Downey Jr, and Watson played by Jude Law. The film was a huge box office hit and the two actors openly acknowledged that they played certain scenes with hints of a relationship between the two characters – a sequel to the movie is planned.

However, the BBC version despite dropping the occasional hint/sly nod to the nature of Holmes sexuality is unlikely to actually state whether or not the character is gay. Sherlock launches on BBC One on Sunday evening and you can read our TV Preview on the new BBC series by clicking here >>
