The BBC has ordered a new six-part drama series from writer Jimmy McGovern which will air on BBC One next year. The drama is described as a ‘spiritual successor’ to McGovern’s critically acclaimed drama series The Street. The Accused will follow six characters that are all accused of a crime and will follow whether or not they are guilty of that crime and what the verdict in each case will be. The BBC is lining up the series to air on BBC One next Autumn.
The series has been commissioned by Ben Stephenson who gave the series the green-light almost immediately. It’ll be produced by RSJ Productions which has been founded by Jimmy McGovern, Sita Williams and Roxy Spencer – the team behind BBC One’s critically acclaimed series The Street. The third and probable final series of The Street aired earlier this year and was seen by an average audience of five million viewers. Although the BBC would happily commission a fourth series it seems unlikely to do so due to cut backs at ITV’s drama department – which produced the series for the corporation.
